Verrazano 2013 Kentucky Derby Odds Favorite

Trainer Todd Pletcher will be sending at least four runners to the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 4 at Churchill Downs including the future betting favorite Verrazano, who is currently listed at 4-1 in Derby future wagering prices released by Bovada.

The undefeated Verrazano won his final Derby prep on April 6, taking the Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, defeating Normandy Invasion by three-quarters of a length, with another neck back to the previously undefeated Vyjack in third.

The Chad Brown trained Normandy invasion has just one win in five career starts, but his solid runner up finish to Verrazano moved him up as a major Derby contender and is currently listed at betting odds of 8-1, currently the fifth choice on Bovada’s betting line for the Run for the Roses.

Vyjack is headed to the Derby for trainer Rudy Rodriguez and is currently listed at odds of 12-1.

The second choice on the betting line at 6-1 is Orb, winner of the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth and Grade 1 Florida Derby, both of those victories coming at Gulfstream Park.

Goldencents, who was the winner of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 6, is the third choice at odds of 7-1. The colt is trained by Doug O’Neill, who saddled last year’s Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another, who also used the Santa Anita Derby as a final prep.

In addition to Verrazano, Pletcher will saddle Revolutionary (15-2), Overanalyze (12-1) and Palace Malice (18-1).

Pletcher could have a fifth starter in Charming Kitten, who ran third in the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass at Keeneland in his last outing. The colt has 20 points in the qualifying system for determining the field, which currently puts him at 21st in the standings.
