Shared Belief Off Derby Trail, Cairo Prince Favorite

Shared Belief, who received plenty of attention in Kentucky Derby future wagering is off the Derby Trail according to his connections. The colt was recently listed at 22-1 at Bovada.

The Jerry Hollendorfer trainee won all three of his starts as a juvenile, taking the CashCall Futurity (G1) on Dec. 14 in his last outing. The colt closed at 14-1 in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager on Feb. 8.

Hollendorfer has been working on getting the colt to the track as a three-year-old, but the colt had a quarter crack which put him behind in his training. The colt is currently jogging at Golden Gate Fields but the trainer said he would likely be skipping the Triple Crown races.

The colt is owned by a partnership that includes radio and television sports personality Jim Rome.

The current betting favorite in Derby future wagering at Bovada is Cairo Prince at 8-1. The colt has won three of his four career starts, taking the Holy Bull (G2) on Jan. 25 in his last outing. His next start will likely come in the $1 million Florida Derby on March 29.

Honor Code is currently listed at Bovada at 12-1.The colt made his three-year-old debut on Wednesday in an allowance race, but was no match for Social Inclusion and had to settle for the runner up spot. His trainer Shug McGaughey said the Florida Derby (G1) or the Wood Memorial (G1) a week later would be the target.

California Chrome ran huge last week in winning the San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita, earning a 107 Beyer Speed Figure. The colt’s price is now down to 15-1 in Derby future betting. Next up likely will be the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 5.

The undefeated Samraat, who won the Gotham (G3) on March 1 for his fifth career victory is listed at 35-1.

Two major Derby hopefuls will be in action on Saturday in the Rebel (G2) at Oaklawn Park. Southwest (G3) winner Tapiture is the 9-5 morning line favorite and currently 18-1 in Derby future wagering. His main rival will be Strong Mandate, who was second in the Southwest. The colt won the Hopeful (G1) last year and was third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) last November.

The colt is trained by D. Wayne Lukas, who won last year’s Rebel with Will Take Charge. Strong Mandate is listed at 20-1 at Bovada in Derby future betting.
